17-year-old arrested in shooting death of 12-year-old Rodrigo Martinez at Fig/Oleander Park in Compton
COMPTON, Calif. — A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Rodrigo Emiliano Martinez at Compton’s Fig/Oleander Park, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) on Sunday.
The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, is facing a murder charge stemming from the tragic incident that occurred on Friday afternoon.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 4:00 p.m. at Oleander Park, located in the 400 block of West Figueroa Street.
Upon arrival, officers found the young victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Martinez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to investigators, a person dressed entirely in black clothing and wearing a ski mask approached the park on foot and opened fire, striking the 12-year-old before fleeing the scene.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and it remains unclear whether the victim was specifically targeted.
The shooting has left the local community shocked and grieving, as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violence.

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Meridian Mall on Friday afternoon.
As a result, the lockdown at the mall has been lifted.
The Meridian Township Police Department issued a public advisory just before 2:00 p.m., urging residents and shoppers to avoid the area near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance while officers conducted an active investigation at the scene.
