Houston, TX – The Houston Police Department (HPD) has detained three persons of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Irwan Paez, an Aldine Independent School District (ISD) student, outside a McDonald’s in north Houston on Thursday afternoon.

The deadly shooting occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. in the 185 West Road area near the North Freeway.

Authorities confirmed that the incident was captured on cell phone video, which provided key evidence in the investigation.

According to HPD, the shooting was the culmination of two days of escalating confrontations between two groups of teens, all of whom are believed to be students at Aldine High School.

A dispute between the two groups began at a soccer game, where one group allegedly flashed a firearm at the other, escalating tensions.

The groups encountered each other again after school at neighboring fast-food restaurants.

Video footage shows the victim and his friends approaching a red Dodge Ram 1500 truck, which was waiting in the McDonald’s drive-thru line.

As the victim reached into the truck, the suspect fired a gun, striking the teen.

The truck then sped away from the scene, appearing to run over the victim in the process.

HPD confirmed that Irwan Paez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, investigators detained three persons of interest after locating and stopping a vehicle linked to the suspect’s truck near Tidwell and North Wayside in northeast Houston.

Grieving family members and Aldine ISD administrators gathered at the scene of the fatal shooting, expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of a young life.

Aldine ISD issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“Aldine ISD has become aware of a shooting that took place off campus after school. During this incident, an Aldine student was fatally injured. The safety and security of Aldine ISD’s students and staff will always be our top priority. As such, an investigation is underway.”

The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division continues to investigate the shooting, including the involvement of those detained and whether additional suspects may be at large.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact HPD at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers of Houston at (713) 222-TIPS (8477).
