A tragic shooting on Saturday has claimed the life of a 27-year-old Bridgeport man, marking the city’s first homicide of the year, according to police.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Lake Street, near the intersection of Reservoir Avenue and Polk Street.

Responding officers discovered Steven Vega, suffering from gunshot wounds to his torso and hand.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the altercation began inside a residence at 242 Lake Street and escalated outside, where the shooting took place.

Vega was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.

Authorities believe the incident was isolated and that Vega and the shooter were acquainted.

Suspect in custody after shooting at Meridian Mall

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Meridian Mall on Friday afternoon.

As a result, the lockdown at the mall has been lifted.

The Meridian Township Police Department issued a public advisory just before 2:00 p.m., urging residents and shoppers to avoid the area near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance while officers conducted an active investigation at the scene.

At this time, police have not released specific details regarding the nature of the shooting, including whether anyone was injured or the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
