Officer Assaulted During Escape Attempt at Highland Park City Jail in Michigan
The detainee allegedly overpowered an officer, using a taser on them during the altercation.
Highland Park, MI – An incident occurred Thursday morning, December 12, 2024, at a Highland Park police facility when an inmate overpowered a jailer, assaulted him, and attempted to escape, according to officials.
The exchange took place before 10 a.m. at a facility located off Woodward Avenue, not at the city hall location or the recently opened substation.
Highland Park Police Chief James McMahon provided details about the incident, explaining that the inmate requested to use the restroom and attacked the jailer who let him out of his cell.
“A prisoner overpowered one of our jailers,” McMahon said. “He attempted to escape. He assaulted our jailer.”
During the altercation, the jailer was punched but is reported to be in stable condition.
The inmate managed to seize the jailer’s Taser and attempted to deploy it; however, the device failed to function. Officers swiftly contained the situation by using a Taser to subdue the inmate, who remained confined within the facility and was recaptured within minutes.
“There was never any danger to the public,” Chief McMahon assured. He confirmed that the inmate had no means of leaving the secured facility during the incident.
Sources reported that the inmate is now restrained in a holding chair.
Operations at the Highland Park police facility have largely returned to normal following the brief disruption. The incident remains under review by the department.
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Meridian Mall on Friday afternoon.
As a result, the lockdown at the mall has been lifted.
The Meridian Township Police Department issued a public advisory just before 2:00 p.m., urging residents and shoppers to avoid the area near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance while officers conducted an active investigation at the scene.
At this time, police have not released specific details regarding the nature of the shooting, including whether anyone was injured or the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
The public is asked to remain clear of the immediate area to allow for the ongoing investigation.
