A tragic shooting incident occurred early Tuesday morning in north Leon County, resulting in the deaths of a pregnant woman, Lay Mya, and her unborn child.

Jha’kari Martin-Sugrin, 22, has been arrested and charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting.

The incident unfolded around 1 AM on River Breeze Lane, prompting deputies from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) to respond to a local hospital to investigate a shooting involving a pregnant woman.

Martin-Sugrin transported the victim to the hospital, where she tragically lost her life and her unborn child.

According to arrest papers, Martin-Sugrin informed investigators that the victim was approximately two months pregnant.

He described an argument that occurred between them at their home on River Breeze Lane.

At the time of the shooting, two children were also present in the home. Court records indicate that the gun discharged accidentally while Martin-Sugrin was attempting to leave the residence with some of his belongings.

The gun was not in his hand but was wedged between his arm and torso.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident and seeking any additional information from the public.

Suspect in custody after shooting at Meridian Mall

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Meridian Mall on Friday afternoon.

As a result, the lockdown at the mall has been lifted.

The Meridian Township Police Department issued a public advisory just before 2:00 p.m., urging residents and shoppers to avoid the area near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance while officers conducted an active investigation at the scene.

At this time, police have not released specific details regarding the nature of the shooting, including whether anyone was injured or the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.

The public is asked to remain clear of the immediate area to allow for the ongoing investigation.
