Authorities have identified Joseph Couch, 32, as the suspect in the mass shooting that occurred on Interstate 75 over the weekend.

A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend him.

Police say Couch opened fire on I-75 in Laurel County on Saturday afternoon, striking 12 vehicles and injuring five people.

According to an affidavit filed by a Laurel County sheriff’s deputy, prior to the shooting, a woman contacted Laurel County Dispatch to report that Couch had texted her threatening to “kill a lot of people.”

Law enforcement officials interviewed the woman around 1:30 AM on Sunday.

She provided officers with the threatening text messages from Couch, which included statements such as “I’m going to kill a lot of people. Well Try at least” and “I’ll kill myself afterwards…”

The woman informed officials that she contacted law enforcement after receiving these disturbing messages.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Couch legally purchased an AR-15 from a local business on Saturday.”

Suspect in custody after shooting at Meridian Mall

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a shooting incident at the Meridian Mall on Friday afternoon.

As a result, the lockdown at the mall has been lifted.

The Meridian Township Police Department issued a public advisory just before 2:00 p.m., urging residents and shoppers to avoid the area near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance while officers conducted an active investigation at the scene.

At this time, police have not released specific details regarding the nature of the shooting, including whether anyone was injured or the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.

The public is asked to remain clear of the immediate area to allow for the ongoing investigation.
